Building an Audi Quattro Group B rally replica in SE Michigan. Episode 4.

If you’ve been paying attention you may recall that in the previous update we were trying to focus on installing parts that would eventually allow us the get the engine in and the car on it’s wheels, not necessarily in that order. In this episode we continue in that vane but without distractions or treats like last time, hopefull

We started off pretty good with the Clutch master cylinder and steering column. Admittedly these are not needed to fire the engine but a damn site easier to install without the bloody thing in the way. It could be argued that the steering column will be handy if we need to roll the car around the shop.

Also part of the “easier now than later list” was bulkhead wiring connectors and brake lines. However, once we started the brake lines we couldn’t resist completing them all even though we won’t need them for ages, maybe ever!

We managed to justify installing the trunk wiring harness by convincing ourselves it would be easier to do before the fuel tank went in which we definitely probably do need to run the engine.

This naturally lead us to install the fuel tank and then the battery wiring. However, we had to make most of that first.

Back to getting the car on its wheels by installing the struts. But first we needed to refinish the springs. Well, wanted to more like. We noticed the works cars used white springs so decided to refinish our brand new ones with Plasti-dip because it’s flexible and, if we change our minds, we should be able to peel it off again.

Of course this meant we had to assemble the struts, tie rods and control arms and mount them to the car.

This left just one item left before the car could sit on the ground: wheel studs. OK and wheels. Two items. Or forty four if you include the nuts.

The car is now ready to trundle round the shop, if we feel the need to take it for a walk.
